rabbanā ātinā fid-dunyā ḥasanatan wa fil-ākhirati ḥasanatan wa qinā ‘adhāban-nār
Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
Q 2:201 — the du‘ā he ﷺ made most often.

Allah does not burden any soul greater than it can bear. For it is what it has earned, and against it is what it has incurred. “Our Lord, do not hold us accountable if we forget or fall into error. Our Lord, do not place on us such a burden as You have placed on those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with that which we cannot bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people[173].”[174]

Notes

[173] Allah Almighty concludes this Surah by directing His servants how to supplicate Him, just as He taught them in Surah al-Fātihah how to praise Him and ask for guidance. [174] Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: "Whosoever recited the last two verses of Surat al-Baqarah at night, that will be sufficient for him." [Sahih al-Bukhāri: 345]

“Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate[5] after You have guided us, and grant us Your mercy; for You are the Munificent Bestower.

Notes

[5] ’Umm Salamah (رضي الله عنها) reported: “The Prophet (ﷺ) used to pray most by saying: “O He Who changes hearts, make my heart firm in Your religion” (yā Muqallib al-qulūb, thabbit qalbī ‘alā dīnik). When she asked him the reason for this, he (ﷺ) replied, saying: “Umm Salamah, know that every human’s heart is between two Fingers of Allah. Whoever He wills, He makes steadfast, and Whoever He wills He causes to deviate”. [Al-Tirmidhī: 3522]

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, wholesome provision, and deeds that are accepted.
Ibn Mājah · ṣaḥīḥ — said after the Fajr prayer.
A note
Before asking for provision, learn to ask for lawful provision. Not more — wholesome. Whatever the language of the du‘ā, let the intention be clean.
13Protection
a‘ūdhu bi-kalimātillāhit-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.
Muslim · ṣaḥīḥ — three times at nightfall; nothing will harm him.
bismillāhilladhī lā yaḍurru ma‘asmihi shay’un fil-arḍi wa lā fis-samā’i wa huwas-samī‘ul-‘alīm
In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause harm; He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
Abū Dāwūd, Tirmidhī · ṣaḥīḥ — three times, morning and evening.
14How to ask
Begin with praise, then the ṣalāt upon the Prophet ﷺ, then ask.
Face the qiblah, raise the hands, and wipe the face after if you wish.
Ask with certainty of being answered; do not say “if You will.”
Persist, and do not say “I asked and was not answered.”
Ask in your own language. Arabic is not a condition — Bengali is also du‘ā.
Tirmidhī, Abū Dāwūd · ṣaḥīḥ
15When it is likeliest
The last third of the night · in prostration · between the adhān and the iqāmah · the final hour of Friday · while fasting, until breaking · while travelling · when rain falls · one wronged, and one who prays for an absent brother.
Every du‘ā is answered — with the thing itself, with something better, or with harm turned away.
Aḥmad · ṣaḥīḥ

Lines with a dotted edge give the sound of the Arabic, worked out by rule from its vowel marks. They are not from the print titles and have not been reviewed: where one differs from the Arabic, the Arabic is right.
