Entering Islam

How does a person become a Muslim?

From the Sabīl library · scholarly review pending

Each answer is an entry of the Sabīl library, shown word for word with its sources. Nobody wrote it for the question, and no machine wrote, shortened or reworded it: the question was matched to the entry that answers it. The library’s scholarly review is still pending. Where the schools differ, the entry says what each holds. For a ruling on your own circumstances, ask a scholar.

The testimony of faith
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ
Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illallāh, wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan Rasūlullāh
I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah.
Said with belief in the heart, this is enough. No witness is required for its validity, no ceremony, no certificate, and no Arabic name. Islam accepted erases everything that came before it.

This is what the library says in general. It is not a ruling on your own case: for that, ask a scholar.
